Frente a frente con el Tiburón Toro / Face to Face with the Bull Shark

En Playa del Carmen un grupo de buzos profesionales vieron en estos arrecifes la oportunidad de generar un cambio: una nueva forma de presentarle al mundo los tiburones, no como unas máquinas de matar, sino como los majestuosos seres que son, los verdaderos reyes de los arrecifes. Vale mucho más un tiburón vivo que un tiburón muerto. Año con año, en esta zona del Caribe Mexicano, ocurre un fenómeno natural único. Con la migración de varios peces “carnada” como la liseta y el coronado, llegan también algunos de sus depredadores como las hembras de tiburón toro, quienes se quedan frente a las costas de Playa del Carmen entre Noviembre y Marzo para aprovechar los arrecifes llenos de peces y comida, aguas someras y sitios para dar a luz a sus crías.En Phantom Divers somos pioneros en interacción con estos tiburones toro: con más de diez años de investigaciones y observación de estos imponentes seres, hemos logrado generar en la sociedad local y turística un vínculo para/con los tiburones a favor de su protección y preservación.

Todo inicia en la tienda de buceo: la emoción se siente en el aire, aquí es donde muchos miedos han sido vencidos y muchos sueños se han convertido en realidad. Esta gente nada con tiburones! Después de ver un video informativo previo al buceo, Jorge “Chino” Loria explica las medidas de seguridad, resuelve todas las dudas y anima al grupo a dejar sus temores en tierra y disfrutar del mejor buceo de sus vidas. “Tomémonos una ultima foto antes de ir al agua, es para asegurarnos de regresar todos completos” - bromea Chino para romper el hielo; mientras la emoción es apenas disimulada por el resto de los buzos.

Llegando al “Shark Site” (sitio de tiburones), desde la superficie se pueden observar las enormes sombras grises rondando en el fondo, y es momento de saltar. Ahora la adrenalina se siente como algo inexplicable e insuperable. El buzo alimentador comienza a cebar el agua con sangre y piezas de pescado, el resto del grupo de buzos se mantiene estático en el fondo, esperando a que inicie el “frenesí”, mientras el buzo de seguridad observa y analiza los movimientos de los tiburones que van llegando. De forma casi instantánea, los tiburones empiezan a tomar turnos para acercarse al alimentador y obtener su pieza de pescado. A veces se unen al festín algunas tortugas y rayas; sin embargo son los tiburones quienes obtienen los mejores bocados. Con sus grandes y robustos cuerpos se hacen saber entre si quien es la hembra dominante del grupo y, a pesar de las filosas hileras de dientes, tienden a ser muy tolerantes y curiosas.

Presenciar esta danza de gigantes con tanta armonía causa una sensación de paz y tranquilidad que contrasta con la adrenalina y excitación del inicio. Los buzos salen del agua fascinados, con una nueva forma de ver a los tiburones, en un mundo donde ambas especies pueden coexistir. A group of professional divers in Playa del Carmen saw in the local reefs an opportunity to create a change: a new way of showing sharks to the world, not as killing machines, but as the majestic beings they are, the real kings of the reef. A live shark is worth way more than a dead one. Year after year, in this part of the Caribbean, a unique natural phenomenon takes place. With the migration of baits like ‘’liseta’’ and ‘’coronado’’, also some of their predators come along, like the female bull sharks, which stay off Playa del Carmen’s coast between November and March to enjoy the reefs full of life and shallow waters and sites to give birth to their babies.

The Phantom Divers are pioneers in interacting with bull sharks: after more than 10 years of research and observation of these impressive beings, we achieved to create awareness in the local and touristi society in favor of shark conservation and protection. Everything starts at the dive shop: you can feel the enthusiasm in the air, here is where fear gives way to excitement, and dreams come true. These people swim with sharks!

After watching a briefing video, Jorge ‘’Chino’’ Loria explains the safety rules, answers all the questions and encourages the group to leave their nerves back at the shore and enjoy the best dive of their lives. ‘’Let’s take one last picture before getting into the water, to make sure we come back in one piece!’’ – Chino jokes to break the ice, while the emotion is barely dissimulated by the rest of the divers. Upon getting to the ‘’Shark Site’’, from the surface it’s possible to spot the enormous grey shades wandering around on the bottom, and it’s time to jump in. Now you can feel the adrenaline as something inexplicable and insuperable. The shark feeder starts to bait the water with blood and pieces of fish, the rest of the group stays compact on the bottom, waiting for the ‘’madness’’ to begin, while the safety dive observes and analyzes the movements of the upcoming sharks. Almost instantaneously, the bull sharks start to get closer to the feeder and catch their bait. Sometimes some turtles or rays tag along; nevertheless it’s the sharks that get the best bites. Among their imposing and strong bodies you can see which is the predominant one in the group and, despite the sharp teeth, the lady bull sharks seem pretty tolerant and curious.

Witnessing this dance of giants with such harmony provokes a feeling of peace and calm that contrasts with the adrenaline and the excitement of the beginning. The divers get out of the water fascinated, with a new way of looking at sharks, in a world where both species can coexist.
